I recently replayed Journey, which I haven't done in several years. I forgot how deep an experience it is and how incredibly Buddhist the concept really is. The end of the game is always somewhat bittersweet as you end your life and walk into the light, the beginning of rebirth and the start of another new journey.
While the experience of finishing the game tugs at the heart, it's also a joyful experience and I was trying to capture the idea of the pilgrim as a dancer, never looking back, always moving forward. Pure fluidity into the light.
I originally had her wearing the flowing cape of the pilgrim, but I decided I wanted the body to be seen and redid the character design to have the fitted dress of a dancer while keeping the concept, colors and pattern work of the original character.
